Precision that was made by people.
An instrument generated at load, where every industrial quality in it is there because a person decided it should be.
The brief
An earlier study grew an abstract specimen out of noise. Noise is the wrong tool here: it makes organic things, and industry does not look organic — it looks cut, faced, chamfered and measured. But a page made only of that reads cold, and the brief asked for the opposite of cold.
A movement resolves the tension, because every industrial quality in it exists for a reason a person decided. The tooth counts come from a ratio someone wanted, the bridges are shaped by hand because they only have to clear the wheels, and the finishes exist purely so the thing is beautiful inside a case nobody opens.
Design decisions
Real ratios, so the motion is honest. The great wheel and its pinions share one module, which puts them at the exact centre distance and turns each pinion 6.67 times per revolution of the wheel — backwards, as a driven pinion must.
The finishes carry the hand. A guilloché rosette is engraved into the plate, perlage is ground across the bridges, and no two screw slots sit at the same angle. A machine could make all three even; nobody wants them even.
Wood is what the hand touches. The metal is set into a turned walnut dish whose growth rings run oval, never round — the one part a person would actually hold, and it warms every metal around it.
Outcome
Thirteen named parts, five jewels and a hundred and ninety engraved circles, with not one model or image file. Both halves of the brief hold at once, because the subject was chosen so they would never have to argue.
A concept project designed in-house, not a client engagement. Figures describe the delivered design system — components, screens, scope and duration — not commercial results.
The concept is live and open to read.
The original build opens in a new tab, with its own case study page alongside it.
